Men in Italy can be very unclassy in the way they try attracting women, don't feel any compliments because they do it to every woman they see. And beware of pickpockets...cannot stress that enough, so many professional teams working there. Backpacks try to keep in the hotel and money put in your front pocket...no wallet! And get as many fake stuff as you can, they look just like the boutique ones!

Don't take rude pictures of yourselves in front of statues and monuments, like so many americans do. Italians hate it when tourists are rude and disrespect their culture by making fun of the fact that all their statues are nude.
If you go to the same restaurant quite often, make sure to be generous with the tips, because the waiters will remember you and give you benefits.
Please don't talk loudly in public places where it's usually quiet, like in a bus or a church or a subway car. Europeans hate it when American tourists talk really loud. It's annoying and pisses people off. You must adapt to the customs of whatever place you're at.
One thing you can be sure of is that everyone in Europe has an opinion of the USA and its citizens, so at least try to leave them with a pleasant impression. Many Europeans feel that Americans don't know how to appreciate their culture.

while in big towns and cities (or mostly while in a place with bunches of people) there will be gypsies.
guard yourself, but be kind. not to kind though. acknowledge these people so that they know you are watching them, but DO NOT let them distract you.
DO stay with an italian family. it is the very best way to live the life. (when in rome do as the romans)
DO drink the wine.
DO see all the sites you can possibly see.
DO go to a market.
DO go to the beach. (but remember, in italy they are not void to nudity)
DO eat the pizza (it is entirely different then the american kind)
DO ask for a "nutella pizza".
DO walk through the streets of the towns in the middle of the night.

- many Italians are VERY superstitious, watch out for this. you might want to do a little research on this. I know one lady constantly thought i was a bad omen, because the first day i was there i ate a meal with them, and i opened the window and had my back to the wind. This is one of there superstitions.

ALSO, try some Limoncello (i believe thats the spelling, its pronounced Lih-mon-chel-lo)
it is way too strong, but magnificent, and a definite tradition, don't pass it up.
oh, and try as much gelatti as possible.
And don't order a pepperoni pizza... its not the pepperoni you think, over there its like bell peppers.

thats all i can think of right now.

good luck, and HAVE FUN!
