It depends on the variety of mango but generally there are several things to look for.

1. Color - Color turns from greenish to orange, red or rosy color.

2. Hold the mango in your hands and very softly press your fingers into the skin. If it gives a little, the mango is ripe. If it is too mushy, the mango is over-ripe.

3. Fragrance - Like any ripe fruit, there is a delicious perfume to a mango.

Do not refrigerate mangos until they are ripe otherwise they will not ripen properly in the refrigerator.

Did you know that mangos are the most popular fruit in the world and the most eaten, even more than apples. Mangos are so very popular in the tropical world. They are my favorite fruit.

We grow mangoes.... hehehehe..... it depends on the variety you want to eat and the ripeness you want to eat it.... we grow at least 5 varieties of mangoes.... we have mangoes only for juices because it is very fibrous when it is ripe, we also have mangoes that we sell while they are still young (yikes.. so sour!!!) but i think what we are selling for export (yes.. we export mangoes too!!!) is the variety most people eat when it is ripe.
Now by using your senses (yes!! eyes, touch, and nose only) you can determine the mango if it is ripe, sweet or not..... first you look at the mango... if the color is even (most mangoes are yellowish)...then it is already ripe... then touch it a little.. if you feel a little uneven soft side of it....put it back and try another.... you can determine the sweetness of it by smelling it (YES!!! you have to smell it)..... it is sweet if you can smell the aroma of it... it means it has a nice mango-ish smell... if its not... DO NOT BUY it!!! its sour inside!!!! sweet smelling mangoes is 98% sweeter than those who doesnt possess the smell... try it to believe.... since i was young we've been doing this and it is 99.9% success of choosing the right mango that is sweet and ripe....a tip from a not so expert mango grower.... hope you can use this when choosing the right mango to buy...but if you really want mangoes that you dont need to smell, etc.... try the dried mangoes....you can eat it anywhere..... even in the plane!!!!

depends on the type of mango it is but it should be well in color all around. if you touch it it shouldn't have soft spots. But it shouldn't be super hard.

It should give a little when pressing on it; and if you smell it, it should smell really sweat. The color should be a bright red, green, and yellow.
