I really want to move there and work as a waitress or a bartender... is it hard to get a job there?

No, but I can understand how it certainly seems that way. When I moved here I wondered how people live there too (I live in Brooklyn, a cheaper, saner alternative) with such high rents. Unlike most of America, New York City has a very liberal housing policy which can actually benefit low-wage workers. I'm surprised that the government has this. Rich apartment buildings have to provide subsidized housing for those who make hourly wages, typically your service job types. Along with rent control many methods are implemented to help poor people. There are housing projects too. Also, someone once said you can find anything to do in NYC. I think it is true. There are so many varieties of jobs you would definitely find something. I hope you make it and welcome to the city!

Every other restaurant seems to be hiring waitstaff. I don't know if that's a good thing. Sometimes the tourists don't tip well (or at all). I know there are places in Times Square that calculate the gratuity into the bill so they don't get stiffed by foreign tourists. Keep that sort of thing in mind if you look for a job in a touristy area. You can make TONS of money as a bartender if you get a good shift. There are a lot of bartenders in NYC so there's more competition for the 'better' bars and night/weekend shifts. You might get stuck with slow day shifts for awhile.
You won't have a problem finding work.

A million people live there, they can't all be rich right? Certain places are more expensive than other but struggling actors and musicians also call it their home. You should have no major problems getting a job
