I think he's too smart to walk into a cat-carry with food in it?

You will need a humane trap for the cat.
If it is used to you putting food out, there will be no problem with it smelling your scent around and on the bowl used to put the food.
When you catch it, put an old sheet or blanket over the trap and all. This will make the cat less stressed and easier to transport to the shelter.
It may take a day or two, but just persevere.

Get him to a spay and release program- we have one where I live- and they might even supply the trap- ours is part of the Feral Cat program- D

you can get a catcher...ppl use them for strays cats ect..but becarfull stray cats can be very visciuos
