I just saw on ESPN.com that the long awaited showdown between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has finally been signed for May 5th, 2007. It will be for Oscar's jr. Middleweight title belt. Oscar said that he has not spoken to Floyd Sr. yet about training him for this fight. With so much at stake in this fight and all the emotions that will be involved, do you think Oscar is better off getting another trainer to train him for this fight like Emanuel Steward? Or should he just go with Floyd Sr.? I think if he goes with Floyd Sr. training camp might be a little awkward. What do you think? Do you think Floyd Sr. is wrong for training some one to fight his son? I probably couldn't do that to my son regardless of our relationship. Love to hear your opinions on this.

I hear you on your point also BklynNYC, but money has a way of doing some quick healing, and remember, Oscar swore he would never fight Vargas. But i was just mainly using Steward as an example. I think McGirt would be a good choice or Freddie Roach as well. Reyes also.

In my opinion, no matter how dysfunctional the Mayweather clan is (and they are) there's still that Father, son connection. What father in their right mind (not that Floyd is in the right mind) would want to train another man to hurt is arrogant son, because that's how you beat Floyd Jr. you hurt him, you beat him, you elbow him, you force your will on him and Sr, knows this.

Gilberto Reyes, the Mastermind behind Julio Cesar Chavez's destruction of Floyd's Uncle Roger has had a few meetings with the De La Hoya camp. Oscar should be a sponge at these meetings and absorb everything Gilberto has had to say. The one thing that Gilberto stresses at every meeting is "You must not be trained by Floyd Sr. for this fight."

Some people would argue that Floyd Sr. is a professional and is above not training his fighter properly for the fight at hand and I say to those same people, "Have you ever watched a interview with Floyd Sr, or any of the Maywethers?" the verbal communication can not be expressed without using obscenities and there is nothing Professional about them.

Oscar needs to get rid of Floyd Sr. and if he doesn't whatever does or doesn't happen to Oscar is Oscar's fault.

The relationship between Oscar and Emanuel is not a good one. Remember that Emanuel was his trainer back in 1997 until Oscar "dismissed" him before his Welterweight Title fight with Wilfredo Rivera. Here are a couple of quotes to give you an idea of why I don't think Manny will be in Oscar's corner;

`I let Emanuel go because of a family problem,'' De La Hoya said of his firing of Steward, "I didn't want to have any friction with my father. He was strongly of the opinion not to have Emanuel Steward."

Steward helped Oscar defeat David Kamau and Hector Comacho Sr, but although Emanuel and Oscar got along well then, the two parted after Steward disagreed with some of Oscar's advisors about the training techniques.

2002 Las Vegas Review-Journal
Boxer Oscar De La Hoya leaped to the defense of his trainer on Friday, saying the only thing he learned from former trainer Emanuel Steward was how to shoot a jump shot.

Steward was critical of De La Hoya's trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., calling Mayweather egotistical and too outspoken. Steward also said he is disappointed that Mayweather is trying to take credit for De La Hoya's recent success.

The decision on who will be his trainer I believe lies with Mayweather Sr. If he says he can't train Oscar to defeat his son then he's out. If that happens Oscar should go seek out the assistance of Buddy McGirt. McGirt's work just in the way he salvaged Gatti's career should raise flags with Oscar. Against PBF he needs to be a complete fighter defense, quickness, counter punching and hand speed need to be working at 110%. .

Mayweather Sr. has been quoted as saying he'd train Oscar and days later another quote comes out that he won't go against his own son. I respect the fact that Oscar said "I want to see if he's got the passion in his eyes like I do." If he doesn't see a full commitment from Sr., Reyes would be his best option.

Personally, if I was Oscar, it wouldn't even be a choice. The father/son relationship is too big a variable to leave to chance. No way do I stay with Roger Sr. for this fight.

The sight of the fight is not yet decided. Vegas or the Staples Center in L.A., based on Oscar's rematch with Mosely (I think Oscar got robbed) as the promoter for this fight he'd better push for L.A.

Without a tune-up fight at Jr Middle, its virtually unknown what to expect from PBF at that weight. That in conjunction with Oscar's age, make this a "pick-em" fight in my view. If PBF fights Oscar like he did Baldomir expect another win but a lot more booing from the crowd. PBF by unanimous decision.

i dont like this deal. a man defending a title doesnt need this situation & i dont see anything good coming of it. if i were oscar, i'd want a different trainer. i hope he finds a world class one & has time for the jello to set. but crazy things happen in boxing. if sr trains oscar & he wins...too bizarre. thumbs up to santanas suggestion

Pancho - Oscar would be foolish to have Floyd's daddy in his corner. Doesn't matter what the realtionship is blood is thicker than water. Santana, Gilberto Reyes, interesting. What's even more intriguing is how will jumping up another weight classification effect PBF? He hasn't brought his punching power with him as he's moved up in weight.

Reyes would be a wise choice to train Oscar, good insight Santana.

all's fare with love and war........Mayweather Jr said he was going to retire after the Carlos Manuel Baldomir fight + he pretty much called out De la Hoya..when he said he knows where I'm at ,so come get it...............i think it will be a great fight and should be the last fight for both..........now Emanuel Steward training De la Hoya honestly great trainer and he would learn alot from him but don't think it will happen, with Floyd Sr. being his trainer before they can build on that+family or not family money talks or the 2 of them just don't get along.........its business nothin more......

De la Hoya wins split decision

Damn you, pancho! You beat me to the punch with this question. I wanted to tell everyone here.
Should he? It depends entirely on him. Will he? I doubt it. If it were your son, would you?
