Penicillin, discovered "by accident" early in the 20th century. Before penicillin was discovered, scientists thought that there should be something that would kill bacteria, and many were looking for it.

Many ancient cultures, including the ancient Egyptians, ancient Greeks and ancient Chinese, already used moulds and plants to treat infections. This worked because some moulds produce antibiotic substances. However, they couldn't distinguish or distil the active component in the moulds.

Modern research on antibiotics began in Britain with the discovery of Penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming. More than ten years later, Ernst Chain and Howard Florey became interested in his work, and came up with the purified form of penicillin. The three shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Medicine. "Antibiotic" was originally used to refer only to substances extracted from a fungus or other microorganism, but has come to include also the many synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs that have antibacterial effects

The first antibiotic was developed from a 'folk cure' - mold that grew on bread. The cure involved putting a poultice of moldy bread onto a suppurating wound and sometimes it healed. The 'healers' thought it was the bread that did the trick, when in fact it was the mold -- if it was the right kind.
Later, when these spores were introduced into petri dishes containing bacteria, the scientists discovered that the mold was capable of killing some kinds of bacteria. Then the chase was on to find which specific kinds of mold worked best.

Penicillin. It was discovered when this guy (forgot the name sorry) put a fungus of some sort on bacteria (something like that :/ ). Strangely the bacteria died, and after more experimentation, he started using as a medicine. This was an accidental discovery.
