The CFL Lamps have the following advantages:
1.High light (Lumens) output- a 11 W cfl lamp is equivalent to 40 W filament lamp. You have an energy saving of 75%.
2.Since the life of CFL is more(about 10 times) and it withstands voltage fluctuations better, it more than makes up the high initial cost. The CFL bulb is offered with guarantee. The incandescent is not guaranteed.
3.The CFL light is more pleasant to the eye.
Overall 75% reduction in energy cost for a more pleasant light is the gain.

It's just a savings of energy. An 11 watt compact fluorescent bulb theoretically puts out the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb (the 60 watt bulb wastes the other 49 watts in putting out heat). If you are charged 5 cents per kilowatt-hour for your power, after 100 hours of running, the CFL lamp would cost you 5.5 cents, while the incandescent would cost you 30 cents.

Additionally, the lifetime of a incandescent bulb is usually in the 750-1000 hour range, while the lifetime of a fluorescent bulb is usually 10,000 hours or longer, so you have to replace the bulbs less often.

I replaced every light bulb in the house. I save about $20 a month or $240 a year. That's like getting 2 free months of electricity for me.
