It seems to me the other answers I read attack you because they do not know the bible but they just have to be right.
I think a simple " I don't know" would suffice instead of ridiculing you for questioning things that are unclear.
One called you hateful. I bet she considers herself a "christian".
Read her response and see the typical christian answer to things they know nothing about.
The bible is not literal. It's impossible due to translation if nothing else. It could also be that it simply isn't true, or not?????
But you keep on questioning it. You have the right.

Hey, this one I have an answer for! It is the Lord, God, that provokes David to number Israel. In 1 Chron 21:1, it says "A satan..." Satan is not capitalized and when the Bible refers to Satan, it never calls him 'a' satan. This "a satan" is referring to anger, the wrath of God. Of course loves us all, He created us but there are just times when we ignore Him and He gets pissed off. Enough to strike us - the Lord's wrath. So these 2 verses are both speaking of the Lord sending David out.

In a parallel account, 1 Chronicles 21:1 says that says that Satan moved David to take a census. Who was it-Satan or the Lord? One explanation is that both are true. The Lord, as the ultimate power, allowed the census, and as is typical in the Old Testament, he gets full credit here. The Chronicles version is more concerned about being precise: Because the census was clearly evil (David confessed it as a sin, verse 10) Satan was more directly responisble. As is so often true of evil, people (and Satan) meant it for evil, but God used it for his own purposes.

Thanks for asking the question. I know the Word of God is inerrant and infallible, but now I also have some very good explanations to use the next time the question pops up (and it WILL pop up again). Plus, I bookmarked the site on apologetics from Intro.
Keep asking; I am learning a lot! Props to my Christian brothers and sisters who answered.

The answer to this supposed contradiction is that God uses Satan to fulfill his purpose it is the same in your religion. i could give you several references in both the Bible and the Qur'an but have decided that you are attacking the Bible rather than searching for truth therefore after being reported and receiving a violation I will withdraw my remaining answers. It has become clear after answering 3 or four of your supposed contradictions that this is an attack rather than a search for truth.

no contradiction it is so simple, there was something in davids heart that had to be dealt with. Satan lost the war, he works for the lord, with unbelievers he does his will but for believers who are children of god he must ask to oppress or god uses him to refine his children

I guess it would appear that way to a mocker of Gods word?!
Try and think about it.....
Like in the book of Job, when God was angry or questioned that is by the devil, IT WAS GOD THAT ALLOWED THE DEVIL TO ATTACK JOB.
**so it is with this example.
BECAUSE.....DAVID ANGERED THE LORD, GOD ALLOWED SATAN A FOOTHOLD IN DAVIDS LIFE(NO MORE PROTECTION) TO GO AGAINST ISRAEL.
-live4truth=] The cross/Jesus= LOVE.

You're just hateful. Yes there are contradictions in the bible, no I'm not smart enough to refute them, but how angry do you have to be at the world to attack a religion?
