Nice hardwoods can raise your home's value, but it's really about what you like and how you live. For instance, if you have kids you might want something soft to fall on that's comfortable to stretch out on to watch tv--carpet.
Personally I like hardwood in the living room, but definitely carpet in the bedroom--it's warmer on your feet in the morning, muffles sound, and you don't track grit into bed.

You know, it depends on what area you live in. In the Southwest, tile gives more value because it's so blasted hot outside. In most other areas, hardwood floors are a better return and most people like them better. In the professional custodial world, they say carpets are the least man-hours for regular maintenance and still sell well. For resale value, the answer for your area, would come from a Real Estate sales person who knows the "buyer's wish list".
I might caution you on moving too quickly on either tile or hardwoods. Both hardwood floors and tile make a room into an echo-chamber. Carpets absorb 80-90% of the ambient noise of a room.
If noise doesn't bother you and you have no plans for kids, do what looks best to you.

Carpet is VERY cozy, and easy to clean on a day to day basis, because you just bust out the ol' vacuum and in 10 minutes, you're done. Hardwoods last MUCH longer though, and generally have a more polished look. Don't get Pergo- type floors though, they need special cleaners and you can almost never use water on them. I prefer carpet in the bedrooms (I love my bedroom to be warm and cozy), but wood in the living areas for a cleaner look. As for the healthier material, it's gotta be wood. Imagine, every little grain of dust and little gross things seep into your carpet everyday, and you can't get all of it out. Hardwoods are SO much cleaner and more allergy-friendly in that way. But they are harder to care for, if you ask me, and can be a little cold. I suppose it depends on what room you're talking about. You could also do wood with large rugs, and have the best of both worlds.

I think hard wood floors are more elegant (and pet friendly), but carpets are more kid friendly (not so hard for falls, etc). There are pros and cons to both. Carpets are warmer and softer, but stain and wear out easier. Hard wood floors are gorgeous and fairly easy to sweep clean, but water and wood does NOT mix.
My suggestion: Wood floors and a nice cushy rug that will give you the warmth and coziness of carpet. It's a nice compromise.

Why don't you have both, the wood floors, with a very large carpet square. I have carpet and it can be a focal point of your house if you choose a strong colour. Then again wod floors can look really lovely but you must be diligent with mopping as all the dust can be seen.

i prefer hardwood floors because i have dogs. they are much easier to clean when the dogs have accidents, although i do love carpet especially in the wintertime. if i had my own place i would have carpet in the bedrooms and bathroom and hardwood flooring every where else:)

Carpet can be tough to clean and will wear out.
Hardwood needs to be swept frequently, is noisy, and not very cushy to walk on.
It really depends on your preferences, the type of home, and what rooms you are talking about.
I personally like carpet better for most rooms.

Carpet is warmer on your feet, an slip proof.
But hardwoods will bring more cash in selling your home, but it's cold

I have two dogs, so I saw hardwood floors. They dont get stains or hold hair, everything comes right up. But they are cold in the winter time.
