Yes, if you are not happy with what the primary care physician has told then ask for a second opinion. As another reader stated, you should ask for a referral to see a good physiatrist. Physiatrist usually specialize in treating chronic pain problems and work closely with neurologists, orthopedists and physical therapists. Actually, physical therapy was born out of the field of physiatry. Anyhow, look up a good physiatrist, they have more nonsurgical options for treatment versus just medication including injection under flouroscopy. Also, they usually have no problems obtaining insurance approval for advanced diagnostics such as MRIs, CT scans, etc and they should be able to give you an exacting diagnosis.
Under usual circumstances, you should not go to see a chiropractor.

Also, chiropractors state that research has justified their techniques, check out the following;
During the past few years, two reports about the treatment of low-back pain have placed chiropractic in a favorable light. One, issued by the RAND Corporation, concluded that spinal manipulation was appropriate for some cases of low-back pain. The other, produced by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), judged manipulation useful for controlling symptoms while awaiting the spontaneous recovery that occurs within a month in most patients with low-back problems.
Although chiropractors have promoted these reports as endorsements of chiropractic, they are not. They merely support the use of manipulation in carefully selected patients. Only a few of the research studies on which their conclusions were based involved manipulation by chiropractors; most were done by medical doctors and physical therapists whose practices are not identical to those of chiropractors. Most chiropractors manipulate the vast majority of patients who walk through their door, some use techniques that have not been studied scientifically, and many urge all of their patients to undergo monthly or even weekly "preventive maintenance" visits throughout their life. In addition, many chiropractors emphasize a technique that is more vigorous (and therefore less safe) than the controlled manipulation used by other practitioners. The only places where "chiropractic" and "chiropractors" are mentioned in the body of the AHCPR report

Linda: I've had surgery seven times on my back and cervical spine. I know I'll be facing a wheel chair in the future.
Back pain is the most elusive place in the body for the doctor to locate. Consider all the aspects of the human spine and the muscles and nerves.
Go see a Neurologist or a orthopedic surgeon. I don't have a clue where you live.
In Michigan we have the Fields clinic of Neurosurgery, he's one of the finest back surgeons in the U.S. he's rated number three out of ten in the U.S.
Dr. Akbar is another one. You can go to the St. Marys hospital in Saginaw Michigan. The other one is The Mayo Clinic in Southern Minnesota. Dr. Kabin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Your going to have to find a good doctor that will take your case and pray. My heart goes out to you. I'm on drug control and may be for life.

I too suffered back pain from a car accident and went for a deep tissue massage. I found that helped a lot. Maybe you could try. Otherwise I know exactly how you feel it affects you everyday. Best of luck

You have not given other details such as x ray report, doctors' opinion etc. You can't walk means there might be sciatica pain from your spine to knee or ankle. Such details are essential.
You might be suggested surgery for the prolapsed disc and you are avoiding it. Please search if there is skilled acupuncturist who have experience of treating sciatica. It differs from lumbago. Otherwise think visiting us if you don't want surgery. If surgery fails then also you can visit us.

Go to another doctor...and another...until you find one who gives you options. You should at least get an x-ray and an explanation of what's causing the pain. It's hard to imagine that there's nothing tha can be done.

you need to find the underlying cause. Is it a muscle injury, a spinal cord or spinus process injury etc... Then you can find the best way to treat it.
