Jog outside for 30 minutes. Not fast, just a comfortable pace for you.
Come home, take a warm shower. When your head hits the pillow, you won't wake up until your clock goes off.

I have chronic sleep issues too, so I feel for you! Ambien is the best sleep med I"ve ever had. There is no replacement for that. As a lighter alternative, have you tried Tylenol PM? Sometimes the herbal treatments for sleep work (I just can't remember all there names because I'm so sleep deprived) and they're sold right along side vitamins at your local drug store. You may try this also, read a very boring book, the Bible or chemistry ect., and that will be sure to put you in a snooze mode. Run a fan to distract any outside noises and plus it's soothing to hear (I can't sleep without a fan). Good luck with your sleep!

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Just listen to the sound of my voice
and I will count down from 10
when I get down to one you will fall into a comfortble, deep sleep
Lie down on your bed
10 - let your feet relax
9- let your shins relax and fall lower into the bed
8- feel your knees relax as you sink into the bed
7 - let your hips relax - feel your hands getting heavy
6 - fell your arms sinking into the bed
5. - let the tension fall from your shoulders
4.push your back into the bed - breathe deeply
3. let your neck relax
2. rest your heavy head on the pillow - oh so comfortable
close your eyes - breathe deeply - in and out
