I think it is a really good production. I have seen the movies twice, seen it played in a theatre once and i have sung the main song in a choir (unfortunately) but in general, i really like the phantom of the opera.

Yes it is very good..
The original book is very good, but if you want a really good read try Susan Kay's Phantom. Based on the original book, but with a much deeper plot. As far as the popular version you may be talking about the stage or movie production. The play is probably one of the best musicals of the last century. But liking it is going to depend heavily on your taste in musicals. True to it's name it is in opera form which means that 98% of it is sung, there are very few spoken lines. Some people don't enjoy that sort of thing. I personally loved it, it is my favorite. The movie was excellent, very well done and true to the musical it was based on, but you cannot beat the original stage production. If you can check out the Las Vegas version playing at The Venetian. They have revamped it and added some new things you can't see in any of the other productions. Very cool.

The first time I tried to watch it.I thought oh singing, and oh brother where art thou. I started reading books about the phantom. "Gaston Leroux" The Phantom of the Opera. Than I read author "Susan Kay" Book called: PHANTOM. The movie was based on a true story. The characters are real people. It is about a beautiful haunting love story. I evan started to enjoy the singing in the movie. I finally cherished it. Give it a try!

Yes. He is the hero of the book after all. After all who else but the hero would give up the love of his life & his only salvation to his compeditor so she can have the life she deserves?

Yes . IT is basically about sacrifices. Both the main character. It is very touching and it can influence us.
