Is it true that if you become an officer you can be deployed at anytime for the rest of your life?

Yes and no. Active duty members who serve a full career and retire are subject to recall (enlisted as well as officers), although it rarely happens. On the other hand, anyone who does just a single tour and gets out may still be in the inactive reserves for a few years and thus subject to recall, but once the reserve time he agreed to when sworn in (read the fine print!) is done, the military can't call him back under any normal circumstances.

Retirees don't get called back often, but it can happen-- which is one of the arguments in favor of retirees benefits. If you retire from the Acme Candy Company and they find themselves short on licorice-makers, they're out of luck. If the military desperately needs logistics officers (or whatever), well... I hope you dodn't throw away your uniforms!

An exception-- people who are medically retired don't get recalled, for obvious reasons.

If you were an active-duty officer, you are ALWAYS a Reserve Officer and can be called in to serve at any time, until you get too old.

I believe that if you are a "regular army" commissioned officer, yes you have a "lifetime" commitment, whatever that really means. active duty "reserve" officers i don't think so. I've read of a few guys getting called back who were in their 50's and 60's

no there's a certain like age or after so many years that they won't call you to active duty. and if you become disabled in some way you chances are slim. i have a elderly friend who wanted to become active for the iraq war but they wouldnt let him. but the younger and more capable you are the more likely you'll be deployed. but it looks like we won't be in iraq much longer due to the democrats change in congress.
