Go to a bird store, there are a lot of breeds of finches! There are a few who look like they are having a bad hair day! & there are very pretty blue ones too! I have zebra finches & they have a nice sound!

While your idea to buy your niece a bird is a very sweet one, I wouldn't just waltz into a pet store and buy the smallest, cutest bird in the place. In fact, I wouldn't even go into a pet store at all.
Finches are active, nervous and delicate and have very specific needs and don't like to be handled or poked or pestered. I can see a small child doing all of these things.
You would be better off with a budgie (parakeet) or a cockatiel. Budgies tend to be nervous too, but when kept alone (one bird, not a pair) they bond fairly easily to humans and will sit on your finger, eat out of your hand and even talk a bit!
Cockatiels can be very rewarding pets, but also require more care than some of your smaller birds. They like to be busy and love to play with their toys, spend time out of the cage and enjoy human companionship.
I would research breeders in your area (online or newspaper classifieds) once you have selected what type of bird you may be interested in. A knowledgable breeder who shows a genuine interest in their birds is usually a good one.
Keep in mind that any pet is a huge responsibility and birds are certainly no exception. Do your homework and make sure you think your niece is capable of devoting the appropriate ammount of time and attention to a new pet. But good luck, and have fun!

Finches are pretty, but aren't tameable. I would definately reccomend a pair of parakeets. They are about the quietest and the most interactive. With persistant training, you can teach them many things - even the males (who are more vocal than females) to whistle a little tune or mimic a phrase! They are the best "starter" birds and are fun and cheap to care for.
This is a great website to learn all about them:

Good luck! :)

If this is for a little girl, definitely go with finches or parakeets, or talk to your local pet shop. Cockatiels are small, but they require a lot of time, and attention. They are not the kind of birds to be satisfied with perching and chirping. I have had 26 cockatiels at one time, and loved it, but I do not recommend these birds to anyone starting out. Best wishes.

A parakeet, finches can be tricky and they are very exotic, parakeets are small and easier to train.

well canary's are great. If you want to get a canary that sings and chirps get a male and if you dont want it to chirp get her a female. But when they are males and they sing they sound great but if she wont want to hear chirping and singing all the time then dont get a male. But if you do get the shop owner or assistent or worker to double check that it is the right gender

How about a parrot, they can talk.Maybe you can impress your niece by getting teaching it how to say her name or something like that.
