I have a clear and sticky, sometimes milky substance in my stool and was wondering what could cause it? My doctor said it was probably mucuss and didn't seem to pay too much concern to it, but I feel like it somehting else. I also have constipation, cramps, and diarhea, and was wondering if its somehow connected?

passing a small amount of mucous in the stool is normal but the pain, constipation, and diarrhea you are having are not...

common causes of passing large amounts of mucuos in the stool are:

-irritable bowel syndrome. this is a disorder of the intestinal tract that causes constipation or diarrhea (some people have both),excessive gas, cramping, and passing of alot of mucous. there is no known definite cause for this condition and no cure. there are medications out there that can treat the symptoms however.

-ulcerative colitis. this condition is caused by the mucous membrane in the intestines becoming inflamed and developing ulcers. these ulcers bleed and form pus and mucuous which is visible in the stool.

some bacterial infections can cause mucous in the stools as well. most of the time, these infections will clear up on their own but occasionally require antibiotics to treat them.

i would stress to your dr the pain, constipation, and other issues you have going on and tell him/her you would like it looked into further. you should not be having cramping, diarrhea or constipation on a regular basis-this is an indication that something is wrong with your digestive system. if your doctor still seems unconcerned after you've stressed that you are not comfortable with it-get a second opinion (this may involve switching doctors). if you have an infection-it's important to get medication to treat it!!

good luck to you

You could be lactose intolerant. If you are unable to digest dairy products, this will sometimes cause the symptoms that you are mentioning. For your doctor to say it was probably mucous and not pay attention or offer suggestions as to a solution would be a reason I would find another doctor to see. It is not normal to have mucous in the stools unless something is going on.

OK you need to find a different doctor... Any time you have mucous in your stool something is abnormal. The only thing your doctor needed to do was order a simple stool specimen. Usually ordering a stool specimen for white blood cells will show any infections, and could order a stool specimen for C-diff which is another infection that causes diarrhea and mucous in your stool. It will also smell really bad... So either ask your doctor to order a stool specimen or find another doctor that will. Remember this is your body not his....

Steatorrhea (or steatorrhoea) is the presence of excess fat in feces. Stools may also float due to excess lipid, have an oily appearance and be especially foul-smelling.[citation needed] An oily anal leakage or some level of fecal incontinence may occur. There is increased fat excretion, which can be measured by determining the fecal fat level. Definitions of how much fecal fat constitutes steatorrhea have not been standardized.

sounds like polyps, watch out for this since its next to cancer. You might want to increase the fiber intake, watch the acid, and vinegar intake, and maybe throw in some yoghurt in your diet. Cut the fast food man.
