first off-if your sore throat is so severe that you are having extreme difficulty swallowing anything (this includes liquids) or it hurts to breathe AND/OR you have white patches at the back of your throat-get in to see your dr asap-these are both signs of strep throat-it's highly contagious and you'll need antibiotics to treat it.

otherwise try these steps:

-gargle with warm salt water (2 tsp of salt to 8oz of water)
-suck on ice or hard candies
-drink hot tea with honey (i like peppermint best)
-put a warm mist humidifier in your room while you sleep at night (this will help keep the air moist so when you breathe-your throat won't dry out and become irritated)
-use sore throat lozenges

if the sore throat persists longer than 48-72 hours-make an appt with your dr. you could have an infection or chronic allergies which will cause your throat to be constantly sore-in this case you might need allergy medications to stop it.

besides items like cough drops, cough syrup.....a big tablespoon of honey that you let slowly slide down your throat will coat it and make it feel better.

if you are old enough, a shot of liquor will help too, just make it a soft brandy or something. no jack daniels.

the best thing you can do would be to see your doctor if you haven't already. if nothing is wrong you could gargle with salt water. i've also heard that you could gargle with peroxide but don't quote me on that. i've never tried it
