Hey guys,
I passed the preliminary written psch test to become a police cadet. They tested my hair for drugs and I just went to orientation. With that being said...I know I am going to fail my drug test for marijuana. After orientation I told the lead dectective of recruit investigations of my situation and he said, "we'll look at your test." and shook my hand. I hate an interview with a detective comin up and just wondering what you guys think my chances are for getting on? I wrote in my file to be handed into the dectective that I know it was wrong and all that. I also said, "I view my stint of drug use as a scar in my life. It wil always be there but there is a lesson to be learned from it. It is a scar that WILL NOT be reopened."
Thanks!

The fact that you were honest with them and told them about it before they found out about it for themselves will possibly help you out. One of the big things when applying to, or even working at, a police department is honesty. They know that people screw up. It's in our nature, nobody is perfect. But if you can accept your screw ups as what they are, admit that you screwed up, and make every effort to ensure that it never happens again, then a lot of screw ups can be overcome. However, if you lie about it, deny it, make excuses, etc., then that shows that you obviously have not learned from your screw up, and it is likely to happen again. It also shows a lack of maturity, a lack of integrity, and a lack of responsibility, all of which are vital to being an effective police officer.
Having said that, though, I have to tell you that there is still a possibility that they will not hire you right now. If you used marijuana just four weeks ago, they may view that as too recent. They may tell you to come reapply in six months or a year, and if you have stayed clean, then it will not be an issue, because you haven't used again. The time period may be longer or shorter. They generally do something like that to give you a chance to show over a period of time that you truly did learn from your mistakes and not done it again.
Without knowing anything more about you or the recruiters, I can't say for certain. But from what you have said here, it can go either way. If it doesn't work now, though, just be patient, show you meant what you said, and come back after a little time has passed.
Good luck.

If you smoked weed withing 4 weeks of taking a drug test, I'd say you chances of getting into the police academy is near zero. You had intentions of being a police officer for a while, and you still decided to smoke weed. The police recruiter will look at this and say, is this what this guy calls sound judgment?

You have shown a pattern of drug use and I really doubt they will hire you. They base your future actions on your past activities. I don't believe that you have suddenly changed. If wanting to be a police officer was your dream, then why did you do it in the first place. You can't say you didn't know it was illegal.
I worked in our human resources dept. for a while hiring police officers and believe me there are dozens of people applying for each position. I had a very long list of qualified people to chose from. If you had to choose between two equally qualified people, and one of them was a proven drug user and the other one wasn't, who would you pick?

Most agencies don't care if you have used a couple times in your life as long as its been 5 years. If you don't pass your drug test you probably won't be getting on anytime soon. Good Luck in the future though.

4 weeks ago you smoked weed=you have no business as a cop. the requirement here is "has not done drugs in 7 YEARS". and if you lied=that is worse.

Well, did they ask you for an interview? If they did, then they don't care. And it's good that you came forward to them; if they do find traces of the stuff in your hair, then you get points for being honest.

Apply to the Border Patrol. They don't care. All they go after is the agents who are doing what they are told to do by their supervisors. Call Chief Aguilar at headquarters in D.C. I'm sure he will have you on your way to the academy in no time.
