I'm glad you're in good health. I wonder if you still have any rehab to go through. It took me a while to recover after a problem a few years back. MADD would probably be glad for you to briefly tell your story at one of their meetings. Maybe high school Driver's Ed. classes could use a word from you as well.

I do not condone drunk driving at all, but anything you do while drinking can get you into trouble. Such as I was drunk the other night and accidentally dropped a match on some chemicals spilled on my garage desk and almost did not get it out. I do however sympathize with your dilemma and future pain, however, I also call it destiny. My family or I may wind up the same way some day, and I hope the person that is careless that causes this either turns his life around, or burns for it if he does not. It's up to him/her. Obviously your grief and pain has overwhelmed you from this tragedy, but alcohol, alcoholics, drunks, or first time drinkers is legal, as long as you do not drive or present yourself in public in a dangerous manner.

I had a friend that slammed into a tree one time that was sober by swerving to miss a drunken pedestrian that had stumbled into the road. He lived with a broken arm and busted pelvis, but the car was destroyed. The drunk got away with 10 months for PD, (public drunk) Part of my point is that anything you do accidentally do can be construed as unintentional and accidental, but if you are drinking or doing drugs you are considered by law as intentionally doing it by sway of the intoxicants. If I where to murder you by robbing you, I would actually get less time then if I where to kill you by DUI. I am a firm believer in let the time fit the crime. If alcohol and drugs where eliminated tomorrow, and I had a stroke by taking antihistamines and hit you driving and killed you, they would probably still burn me at the stake if I lived. My main point is that the justice system is completely bass akwards, and DUI is a big money game to them. Cigarettes are the same game because the companies generate BIG taxes for the state and federal departments, as well as alcohol companies. The drunk could have hit you even if he was not drinking; after all, he had more than drinking on his rap sheet from what you just explained. Don't blame the drunk, blame the system you live in, and God speed on your recovery.

AA would be an excellent place to speak about your experience. It would be an extra incentive to those trying to get over their addiction. If it just keeps one more drunk off the road, it will be time well spent.

Write about your experience and send it to your local papers - I bet they get published. Send your story to a few magazines. DUI is a serious concern and a hot button topic today.

I live in a state that has some of the toughest OUI (DUI) laws in the country - and, as you well know, for damned good reason.

Hey

YouTube seems to have made a lot of people famous and is great for attention. If you could put together a short powerful skit about what you want to say and people begin passing it around who knows how many you could reach

good luck

MADD doesn't care if you are a mother. They would love to have you as a speaker. You should contact them. There is also a group called SADD - Students Against Drunk Driving, and they would welcome you too.

You could go visit high schools and junior high schools in your area. Tell your story as part the anti-drugs programs.

MADD will probably welcome you as a speaker even if you don't exactly qualify.
