I'm glad you're so committed to your new feathered friend. Maxie probably needs lots of love right now.

Parrots are very intelligent and social creatures. They need daily interactions with either other parrots or their human owners in order to stay mentally and physically healthy. But since Macaws are so intelligent, it can take a while before one can accept you and form a strong bond. It is especially difficult if a parrot has been passed around from owner to owner in a short time span because the poor bird hasn't spent enough time with one person to form a proper relationship with. And Maxie, it seems, has gone through just that. Even if the previous owners mean well, it is still stressful to move to a new home and meet a whole new set of strange people.

Keep in mind that adopting a large parrot is like adopting a 2 year old child. They need to feel safe and loved. And they need to fully trust their new parent before they can return the affection.

But keep working at it. It may take several more weeks or even months before Maxie understands that you're going to be her one and only. That she won't have to move anymore. My advice is to not be discouraged....it'll take a while. Till then, read up on Macaws. Join a parrot web ring and talk to other veteran parrot owners. You'll find that they have tons of valuable information. And find a trusted veterinarian right away. A vet that specializes in birds would be ideal, but most veterinarians well trained in caring for exotic animals like large parrots. Plus, they can also give you lots of extra advice on how to help her coup with her new surroundings.

I hope this helps. **** luck with you new friend.

Seven is not old for a bird of this type, but keep in mind you are the 2nd owner in 6 mos., so she needs time to adjust. You will have to earn her trust, and when she sees you are going to be with her for the long haul, she will come around. Take your time with her, speak to her softly and often. The main thing is to be there for her and with her. Try the handfeeding several times a day, with something you can hold out to her in your fingers at first so she does not actually have to reach all the way into your hand for the food. Gradually use food that is closer to your hand that will require more contact. It will not take as long as you might think. These birds love the attention and companionship. Best wishes.

How sweet :) I don't have any macaw's,...however if it makes you feel better to know,...I do have 4 parrots and with alot of work and attention you can get them to trust you. I trained a female yellow-nape amazon,...when I got her she was 4 and I was told I would never be able to hold her. She was raised by a breeder that had way too many birds to ever tame them. Within 9 months I could hold her and pet her. She is well behaved now. :)
Best of luck with your new family member :)

It took me a whole year to gain my B and G Macaw's trust. Now he is very bonded to me. Get educated on the proper way to work with a bird. It will take time but it should happen.

she isn't very young but you still might have a good chance of teaching her to do the things you want her to do. Just show her the love and once she gets to know you alittle better then she will befriend you alot more, and also show you she loves you as well.
