It is a fact that Man is accelerating this process, but nevertheless, Global warming caused by greenhouse gazes notably water vapor and CO2, happened many times before throughout earth's history. The main cause : Volcanos!! In my mind, the media, backed by some scientists omit this type of information, why? maybe because if you knew that global warming wasn't something new then it wouldn't be breaking news, and the media wouldn't be making money off of it.
Yes, some species will be extinct, but this also, is natural. Territories left behind by those extinct animals will be repopulated by new species, better adapted species.

Actually, whether man is accelerating this process is questionable. We do know from history that the earth goes through cycles of warming up and then cooling down. It's interesting to look at some of the titles of articles published 30 years ago warning us of the upcoming ice age - some of those people are the same ones warning of global warming. There are actually records existing from the 12th century where it had warmed up so much that crops were being grown in Greenland, which is now virtually totally covered in a thick layer of ice. Let's be honest though, it would be great for Canada if global warming continuesd. We have so much arable land in the north that is useless because of the permafrost. Imagine how much we could grow if the earth warmed up some more. Canada could easily feed the entire world.

True, temperature varies with time. However, temperature has never varied this fast or as radically as it has now, without a major cause (massive volcanic eruption, collision from space, etc.). It's even more disturbing that the major temperature increases of the late 20th Century have been happening DESPITE the cooling effect of massive volcanic eruptions such as Pinatubo in 1992 and a large eruption in Mexico in the 1980s. So the source of your smugness should actually be suggesting there is more cause for alarm than you realize. Another frightening aspect is the fact that the effect of greenhouse gases such as CO2 takes place not over years but over centuries -- we have not BEGUN to see the result of the greenhouse gas emissions that have already been made.

This is also hardly a trivial time of extinction. More species are being wiped out today than were dying 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs died! I don't think you'll find anyone who thinks THAT was a good period for the dominant lifeforms!

You are correct in your observation that the earth warms and cools, in fact, glaciers have ruled during most of the last 1 million years. The last warming was from about 800 AD to 1300 AD and it was a warmer time than the present. About 1350 AD the earth cooled dramatically and human kind suffered almost continuous weather disasters. About 1850 the cool down ended. Much of this cool down was due to the North Atlantic Oscillation which usually allows warm air to flow into Europe. Cool down occur when the NAO reverses and cuts off the warm air flow in the North Atlantic and European area. Here in North America winters are also very severe. In Colonial times the ports of Baltimore and New York routinely froze into solid ice.

Quite the question. If you understood these cycles of the past 600,000 years, which have never been even close to the levels where they are now, you might not be so smug in your ignorance. Yep, tobacco didn't cause cancer according to the same sort of scientists. The people making money off disregarding the environment have bought some good p.r. and fortunately for them the general public is too greedy, selfish, and stupid to see through their game. Good work.

While this is a prevalent theory among many skeptics of human caused global warming. The general consensus among scientists is that humans are one of the main causes of the current trend in global warming.

Did you know that people can die from a recurrent cycle? Did you know that natural forces can destroy your home and livelihood? Did you know you can do something to stop natural process from being destructive? Do you know that even when faces with these truths, people like you don't try to do anything about it? Do you know that YOU can be hurt by global warming?
