III. The Final Purification, or Purgatory

1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. the tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin." From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.

There is actually some good infomation to be heard by listening to Catholic radio. You might like to check out www.ewtn.com and find out if there is an affiliate radio station near you. Also, for more info you can check out the following article by apologist Patrick Madrid.
http://www.envoymagazine.com/PlanetEnvoy/Special-PurgatoryEmergencyRoom1.htm
If that link doesn't work, try www.surprisedbytruth.com. You'll need to scroll down and look for the button that says "The Biblical doctrine of purgatory" and that link should take you to the same article.

One of their hosts named John Martignoni also has some talks that you can download for free from his website www.biblechristiansociety.com, and one of them discusses Purgatory. Part of the talk is on Mary, the other part is on purgatory. Hope this helps! Oh, by the way, you might want to read the Catechism. There's all kinds of great information in there to clarify a lot of questions.

Before you study some more, take a peek at this:

Should be interesting if you watch the thing, or perhaps at least look at the notes, under the purgatory section. You might find some surprising truths--and perhaps you will discard these ideas of purgatory. What good is Christ's grace if we have to earn it? It is free for us, and yet we still insist on trying to earn our way to heaven? Seriously; accept Christ's free grace. God bless!

Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.

Purgatory is not mentioned in the Bible.

Read God's Word and look for evidence of Purgatory first before concerning yourself with learning more about it. Seriously.
