More than 41 languages sub-dividing into 90.
(South, north, east and west part is used in different drawling. this is sub division) - 22 Official languages of Govt. of India. Arabic is taught in Schools and Colleges, which started by the MES (Muslim Educational School) Schools, but now spread as many Indians are working in Gulf Countries - It is not right that only Muslim students are studying Arabic and I have proof. Like-wise, many muslim students study 'sanskrit' also. This is from Kerala State statistics.

Hindi is the official and main link language of India. Its homeland is mainly in the north of India, but it is spoken and widely understood in all urban centers of India. It is written in the Devanagri script, which is phonetic and, unlike English, is pronounced as it is written. Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsha. It has been influenced and enriched by Dravidian, Turkish, Farsi, Arabic, Portugese and English. It is a very expressive language. In poetry and songs, it can convey emotions using simple and gentle words. It can also be used for exact and rational reasoning.

ard 27-29 Ofiicial Indian languages depends which state you are in .
Hindi the national language of of India
Tamil is the classical language of India
Sanskrit is also a classical language of India
But Hindi cannot be used in all states, suppose u travel to south ,exp Andhra, u have to know Telugu, coz Hindi might not be spoken there, so English is often used among Indians.
As for the Indian Muslim studying Arabic, might be an option or they cld have chose to study that, but no such thing as Indian Muslim only studies Arbaic.
India is complication.

There are about 21 'primary' languages spoken and 'recognised' in India, though there are many more 'dialects' and 'vernaculars' (languages specific to some regions or 'castes'). Major languages are Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Kashmere, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, Kongani etc., and, English, a familiar language in most parts of India. Sanskrit is also a language learnt by many in India, though spoken by very few: Arabic is learnt in school and college level by quite a few, including many non-muslim scholars for its literary value as well as practical use for travels in Gulf region! (Muslims learn Arabic at a very early stage in life, for closer understanding of Koran.). Officially, most States in India have a 3-language arrangement, with local language and Hindi, and English also allowed as medium of communication in recognition of its global relevance. Quite fascinating, if a bit complex, this language scenario!
