If I were to move from the U.S. to Canada, would I have to apply somehow to the Canadian government for citizenship? If I just moved there and rented an apartment, would I be considered an illegal alien? Can American citizens in Buffalo, NY, be employed in Canada? At what costs?

Sure. Anyone can be an illegal alien in any country. Being illegal in a country involves crossing the border and staying without going through the proper channels and getting the paperwork for permission.

You would be an illegal if you just moved and didn't apply for a resident visa. If you are a student, there is different paperwork.

Yes, you can be employed in Canada. You'll have to check with the government to find out the tax implications.

Most jobs in Canada want Canadians to fill the positions, so it might be difficult to find a job in Canada.

You would have to apply for citizenship in any country, just like everyone else. Yes, you would be illegal if you just moved there. You can be employed there, but why would you. Unless you were making some ungodly amount of money, the dollar is cheaper there and you would have to make a good bit more money there to equal a good pay here.

Yes, you'd have to apply for citizenship. Yes, if you just moved here and rented an apartment, you'd be considered an illegal alien. And in order to work here, you would need to get a work visa in advance of coming to Canada.

Mexicans, however, can move here, work here...pretty much do anything they want to without any paperwork or restrictions. We just love Mexicans!!

Heh! Just kidding. Mexicans don't like it here. Too cold:)

Americans are not illegals in Canada because they can enter it even with a passport only and no need for a visa because the Americans are presumed to return to their country.

In order to live in Canada, you first have to have a passport form the U.S. and then apply for a visa. You will have to apply for an equivalent of a U.S. work permit to work there.
