I've been dating a 35 years-old guy on and off for about 8 months. I'm thinking about getting him a Ralph Lauren wallet (about $150 worth), since a wallet is something he might need. Since he is in his 30's, I feel like I cannot give him something too cheap. Do you think I'm spending too much or too little? What other gift ideas do you have? What is appropriate in my case?

$150 is just about how much he pays for dinner every time we go out on a date. (FYI, we go out about once or twice a week.)

The key to your question is--on and off--I would never suggest that anyone spend that much on a--on and off--Let him spend the money. A gift could and should run about 50 bucks. What you start off doing, he will expect from then on.Can't he use an office set, tools,or maybe outdoor equipment?Just take care of your money, until it gets SERIOUS..Good luck.

My wallet is worth 10 bucks and it's lasted me years. Don't waste $150 on a wallet. Unless he really really wants that certain wallet, you could buy him 15 normal wallets for the same price. Heck my friend makes his own wallets for free out of duct tape. They also sell branded leather wallets at the swap meet where I live for five bucks a piece. For $150, you could get 30 of those. Now I don't know where you eat dinner but $150 is what my family spends on groceries for a whole week.
I'd say take that money and go on a skiing trip up in the mountains.

I think this is a good idea and why not if you can afford it...
Gold necklesses and rings, if he would wear them; my husband doesn't even carry a wallet so that is out of the question for me but I have bought him coats and jackets, usually I try to go with a theme like one year it was Nascar stuff, shrits, sweat shrits, hats, bumper stickers, collectable cars. The other year it was his favorite football team, and the other time right after he had bought a new truck I got him things like designer floor mats, locking gas cap, an expensive car wax kit, and things like a note pad, tissues stuff he might need for the inside that he could have in there at all times. The other time my theme was all camping stuff.
It doesn't matter what you spend on him and I think you should spend at least that much if he spends what you say he does on taking you out then think about what his gift to you might be and or cost.
Good luck!

A $150 wallet is way too much even if it is a "designer" brand. You can buy a good quality, good looking wallet for much less & it will last just as long. I bet he wouldn't care whether it's a "designer" wallet or not. Whatever you decide upon, it's traditional to put a penny in it for good luck.
I can understand your wanting to overspend but please don't do it. He is able to spend all that money on you or he wouldn't be doing it. He isn't doing it so that you will buy him nice gifts. His age has nothing to do with it & the amount of money you spend shouldn't either.

if someone bought me a 150$ wallet id think they are nuts and leave immediately, theres a different between nice and just a waste of money. A 30$ wallet of real leather and a 50$ watch would be a much better idea IMHO.

I would not go the wallet route. The men I know are quite attached to the wallets they have, and are reluctant to give the "broken in" ones up. The money issue is partially about what you can afford. Cheap is a really difficult thing to define when it comes to gifts- who's to say?

i think the wallet is a good idea because it's not too personal yet not too abstract like socks. You may be able to find a similar Ralph Lauren wallet a bit less expensive and purchase his favorite cologne to go along with it

I think it sounds like a great gift. I dont think age has anything to do with the amount of money you spend on a gift, and I dont think most guys really know the value of alot of things. A wallet sounds great, maybe you could purchase a cheaper one if you are worried about the money

Try not to spend on the product that cost more than 250, ya, a wallet is a great gift (came first to my idea as well)

Sounds appropriate, as long as you have a really nice picture of yourself to tuck inside it. Oh -- don't know if you're superstitious or not, but it's unlucky to give an empty wallet or purse, so put a piece of silver in it as well. A dime will do or a silver dollar if you feel flush.
