Talk to your pharmacist. There are some great, and some not so great lice shampoos out there. When you have killed off, and gotten rid of all the lice, put a few drops of tea tree oil in the shampoo and conditioner that you and your family uses regulalrly. The tea tree oil will prevent the lice from coming back.
Wash all the bedding, and such in hot to boiling water. If you can not use hot water, stuff it all in zip-loc baggies, and put it in the freezer for 24 hours. This will kill everything, lice, bed-bugs, 'roaches, eveything. After freezing for 24 hours, wash clothing, etc in an anti-bacterial laundry soap.
Sorry if this isn't much help.
Someone said to cover the head with olive oil and a shower cap for an hour. This works also, but it needs to be repeated every two days for a week. Olive oil is best as it has the strongest odour, but any cooking oil will work. when you put the shower cap on, wrap a towel around as well, the heat will help.
Just don't forget to use tea tree oil regularly when you wash the hair after you have gotten rid of the lice. Another use for tea tree oil is that during the spring -fall it helps keep the 'skeeters away. You can try citronella oil as well for killing the lice.

3 words - TEA TREE OIL. I guarentee it works.
After treating them with a commercial treatment, add a few drops of the oil to their shampoo, wash, rinse, repeat. Take a comb and comb very thouroghly. This helps especially with the nits.
Wash everything that they come in contact with in scalding hot water and bag it up (or cover it after spraying it with commercial riddant) for 48 hours. You will more than likely have to stay elsewhere (hotel) until the process is complete, but it is really the most thorough way of getting rid of them and making sure they don't come back.
Wash their hair with the tea tree oil mixture until it's gone. Continue to comb out their hair and repeat any steps as necessary. Also, if you've got furry animals, you may want to give them a bath in the same mixture. It will do nothing to harm them, or your children so long as you don't put more than 5-10 drops of the oil in at a time...and even then, all they will more than likely get is a rash due to an allergic reaction with is EXTREMELY rare.
If you cannot get to a hotel for 2/3 days, you'll more than likely end up having to buy your children new mattresses, clothing, brushes, etc.
Oh and by the way, you can get a 2oz bottle (which is more than enough) of tea tree oil at your local drug store for around $3-$4. Sorry if you needed that in a different currency...but there you have it, You're exhausted but lice free. =)
Good luck.

Yep, Neem Oil. You can find it at many health food stores. You add it to the shampoo and also use it straight up as a treatment. It is good for many things. Be careful to use a product that is rich in Neem and isn't full of other addatives. You can purchase some online at echonet.org This is a non-profit mission organization working in agriculture. Neem is a top selling product with many properties. Several of the FL school systems have been recommending this to the parents at the set out outbreak of lice. Good luck!

Total lock-down and quarantine is in order. Do the kids hair and anyone else in the house (parents AND pets) in RID per instructions. (Well treat pets with animal equivalent of course.) Then take all their toys that are soft wash and dry them and all the bedding, wipe plastic toys and hard surfaces down with clorox anywhere, shampoo the carpets, the beds, the furniture. I mean deep clean! After all that do everybody's hair again.
Also ban sleepovers for a few weeks, don't send them to school either just notify school so the other parents can do the same. Schools must keep the fact that it's your kids confidential.
Good Luck

Cover their head with mayonnaise and cover their hair with a shower cap. Leave on overnight and next morning, rinse with vinegar. Comb hair with a comb that has very close teeth.to get rid of dead lice.
OR
Buy RID over the counter at store, use at least twice and you'll get rid of lice, make sure you use little comb that comes in box to get rid of dead lice.
Keep hair clean afterwards, checking their hair everyday for at least 2 weeks. Check once a week afterwards.....

You must suffocate the lice and their eggs. Put Cetaphil lotion on their hair, cover with a shower cap and leave on all day . Repeat the next day. They'll all die, eggs and all.
This is confirmed by many pediatricians. Vaseline also works almost as well.
