Absolutely, positively a Jeep. Ideally, a Wrangler, but if you need something a little bigger, a Cherokee Sport, or Classic. Don't get the Grand Cherokee.
Whatever you do though, do not by that POS Jeep Compass.

I've had two. I drive a 2006 GC Overland now, but I had a 99 GC Limited. I think that they are the best SUVs in their class. Obviously you can argue that there are better SUVs out there, but you are talking about much more expensive cars. If you are comparing it to Ford Explorer and Chevy Trailblazer for example, the Jeep stands alone in comfort and luxury if you get a good package(limited/overland/srt-8). If you are talking base model Laredo, it's still a great car but don't get the V6.

Obviously a Jeep. It is all personal preference however. You can ask a hundred people and get a hundred different answers. I personally like jeeps. I feel they are dependable, and a hell of alot of fun to drive. Make a list of the things you are looking for in a SUV and go and test drive as many as you can. Do some research and see who has the best rating for a particular make and model. But if you ask me I wouldn't drive anything but a Jeep, and I would steer clear of Ford... But thats just me!

There is nothing like a jeep. Keep the tires at the suggested pressure and it will be smooth on all conditions. I even fell asleep in an old one driving on a dirt road in the mountains. Last year Toyota had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. For ex: three years ago GM was one of the worst companies, now they have the most top-rated vehicles, and the quality/reliability surpasses Toyota. Honda is still on top of the reliability ratings. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. Here is a quote from the Washington Posts review of the Toyota CAmry "one of which is the Chevrolet Malibu, which in my real-world driving experience has been every bit as good and reliable as the much-ballyhooed Camry but has been maligned primarily because it is a Chevrolet". Oddly enough that was an '04 Malibu VS the totally redisigned '07 Camry. Common problems with Toyotas are plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix" GM is also the worlds fastest growing manufacturer, and that dosent happen by accident.

for all around, i love my Chevy S10 Blazer. i kept up with my friend in his Jeep Cherokee doing some four wheeling, and it fits all my friends, and all our gear when going skiing in the mountains. plus it gets 24 MPG on highway, and about 18 in the city. living just out of boulder i usually average 20-21. so it's a lot better than the huge gas guzzlers.

It depends on what you want to use it for. Are you looking for something with lots of power to plow through field of bushes and rocks? Or are you looking for a SUV to shuttle kids between soccer practices and pick up groceries? Do you need a lot of room? How sensitive are you to high gas prices?
Think about what you want to use it for and how much you can afford.
Toyota Highlander is pretty good if you just want to drive on paved roads and don't want to worry about paying too much at the pump.
