Some people just have to try to interpret every syllable of the Bible literally, to the exclusion of everything else ... including common sense and history.

Any reference only to a tree is done to draw a comparison between the primeval tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the tree on which Christ was crucified.

One atones for the other.

Crucifixion was invented by the Assyrians around 1100 years before Christ, and adopted by the Romans because it worked so well.

Everyone always knew that an upright and a cross bar, in one of several different configurations, was used in a crucifixion (hence the term "cross").

Otherwise it would have been a simple matter of impalement on a single, upright stake, which was a common method of execution, a little further north and east, but not one generally used by the Romans, in the time of Christ.

It's hard to keep people from sliding down those stakes. And if you just shishkabob them, they die too quickly.

Crucifixion, with a real cross, was the logical answer.

Practical fellows, those Romans!

About 300 years after the crucifixion, all three crosses used at Calvary the day Jesus was crucified, were unearthed near the present day site of the Holy Sepulcher.

More evidence for the cross.

He was nailed to a cross. He was not the first one, nor was he the last who was crucified. That was a Roman death sentence. The reason for that is to prolong the pain and suffering of the person, and to show all people what will happen to those who were sentenced to death. In some situation, it was also meant so as the people can participate in the punishment, by throwing rocks etc. Usually a person would be on the cross dying slowly. It was intended for that, to prolong the death as much as possible, as if killing the person is not enough, a person must suffer as well. Shameful.
Does it matter if it was a cross, a tree, or a log. He was crucified.

The Romans used a variety of crosses, the most popular being the Tau cross (T shaped) and the 'St Andrew's Cross' (X shaped ). They also occasionally used trees and stakes. The Tau Cross was originally designed to mock the Egyptian god of life. The idea was to kill someone on the symboll of life. This is likely the cross used on Jesus. Incidentally, most such victims were not allowed the dignity of a loincloth. They were stretched out naked for the passing crowd to watch. Many were castrated as well. It was a dirty, ugly business.

You mean "crucifixion?"

It was a method of execution used by the Roman Empire. A common practice was to tie or nail the extended arms to a cross-bar, and then raise the cross-bar up high to a mounting place. It might have been on a tree, or a stake. The feet were then nailed or tied in place against the tree trunk or stake.

Museums in Jerusalem show three different ways of mounting the cross-bars to trees, dead tree trunks, or to post-stakes.

Death was eventually brought on by suffocation because the weight of the body would pull shoulders out of joint, immobilizing the expansion and contraction of the chest and lungs.

To be Crucified: A torture dating back to the early Roman Empire, and even before. One is tied, or nailed to two beams of wood, that follows the body when arms stretched out, and legs down. The crucifix can be right side up, or upside down, depending on the torturee - It can be a means of execution as well. It is on a "Cross" - That is staked in the ground.

It was two beams formed to make the shape of a cross. He carried one and simon the cyren (sorry can't rmbr the spelling) carried the others after the Romans thought he was taking to long and stumbling too much.

The real meaning, is that Jesus loved us so much that he endured the shame and pain of the cross for each of us individually to come to the saving Grace of Jesus Christ.

I think the bible uses the word tree, but since he carried it it cant be just a tree. With as big of a deal as the governments made of Jesus' death and the way they had to stretch his arms most scholars believe it was a cross. I'm glad that no matter what Christ was hung on his blood can cover my sins with only my acceptance of his death according to the scriptures.

God Bless

I seen something on the discovery channel once and they were saying Jesus had to of died on a straight pole or beam. He died of suffocation, and they did studies to prove it. With a mans arms out stretched he could breath fine, but when they put his arms together over his head, after a few hours the subject had difficulty breathing. And they pointed out that crosses were not the form of execution in Jesus' time, it was afterwards. And what was used in Jesus' time was a upright pole. Very interesting documentation.

Jesus was hung on a cross with nails in each hand and one in his feet. He was the lamb that was supervised for us. So when we sin and repent and ask to be forgiven , Jesus says Father forgive them for they know what they do. By the blood and the stripes of Jesus beating The Lord heals and forgives us. Man will not forgive you , Satan will try to tell you that you can not be forgiven, But the Lord will forgive all. So when you go before the Father your sins are all forgotten.
