I cut them myself the first time with help from a friend, and I loved them. Now I've forgotten how I cut them the first time, and after trimming them they just don't look the same. (Short style/eyebrow level)

cut them while they're dry and straight. do a little at a time. also if you want them to be a little more choppy, start by cutting them vertically (take the scissors, hold up a piece and chop upwards BUT NOT TOO FAR!). also i would suggest if you're sweeping them to the side not to cut them at an angle, it will look more natural if they are cut evenly and then just swept over.

Do it layer by layer. I cut my own bangs too after watching the hairdresser do it and deciding it would be easy.
Grab your whole fringe, and pin it back leaving a thin layer over your forehead. Then cut that to the length you want it. Then let down a bit more, and use the last layer as a guide for how long you should cut the next layer, and keep doing that until it's all done. I don't know how clear that explanation was but I hope it helped. Otherwise, go to a hairdresser this time, and pay attention to how they do it, then do it yourself next time. Good luck : )

I'm not good at trimming bangs, I just thought you might like to hear what I did to my niece when she was about 4 or 5 yrs old.
You see, her father is African-American and her mom is Causasion (I'm trying to be politically correct). Nikki's hair is more kinky curly than straight. She came out of the bathtub and I thought I'd help her mom out by drying her off etc. Her mom asked me if I would trim her bangs. I said sure, why not. Well, I totally forgot, that when her hair dries, it was going to curl back up. I cut her bangs waaaaaay to short. When her hair dried, the poor kid looked ridiculous. It looked like someone just painted a line of curls across her scalp. I felt like sh**, she was crying and told me "Auntie, you're NEVER gonna cut my hair again!" I could not stop saying I was sorry. She is 28 now and I still don't think she's forgiven me!
:-)

wash them first.
sweep them off to the side (if you want side bangs)
start trimming from the eye and go towards the ear.
dont start trimming from where you want the cut to start.
start lower

Cut a little at a time until it's right. If you want them shaggy, you need more hair at different lengths.
