I now under CA law am still the owner of this vehicle! How can I get out from under this? I cannot register it, show insurance, smog cert. etc!!!!

If you gave him the pink slip there was a release of liability form attached. You were to fill that form out with both your and the new owners info. Then, you mail it into DMV, and this releases your liabilty. If you did that, you're cool, if not....

call DMV! just tell them you need a release of liability form for the vehicle since it was sold.
Tell them the new owner hasnt done a title transfer..they will assist you

why dont you know the name of the person? kinda comes hand in hand when your selling a car.
