There are also people who became closer to God when they grew up realizing how lucky they have been in their lives. Not only those who experience perilous circumstances. Most of them who were in distress was promising God something as long as are able to get out of that circumstances and when they did, they all thought they were really helped by God in one way or another to escape the ordeal. So, the normal tendency is to be more religious.
If you are looking for God the way you are looking, you should have called Superman or Batman your god and the superheroes your archangels. Whatever happens to your life is a result of your choice of activities at that time. God is not steering your life as a common relief message to those in sorrows. You create your own fate. What you are at the moment is the result of what you choose or did not choose to do. Your circumstances is built by your parents, their parents, theirs and your environment, social and natural changes that affected you in your place and in your life. God could only give you the wisdom to learn about surviving but the understanding is yours to really know well if you could adopt your self to any given situation.
Many times you forget about Him when you are in the highest peak of your success or when extremely happy with some of your amusements in life and you only come to remember Him when your life becomes miserable, so how can you expexct Him be immediately by to rescue you when He saw that you do not need Him all the time? If you want to happen what you asked for, let Him be with you with every breath you take and see if He is not there in time.

Some people become more religious because they feel that when they were in danger, their odds of survival were so small, that for them to have survived, supernatural forces had to be at work.
*Edit*
Where was God? This question may ultimately never be answered. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Patron Saint of theologians, gave, in my opinion, gave the best answer as to why God allows evils and bad things to happen on earth: God knows that out of evil, more good may be produced.

It's kind of a hard question, because in a way you could ask that about anything in the world- I mean why does God ever cause pain or trouble? And I guess the answer is just that He's waiting to see what we'll do when we're in pain, and sometimes people nned the pain, or deserve it. But that's still kind of a loaded question.

I believe some people are so stubborn that God allows something catastrophic to happen to them to sort of snap them out of it....and that the veneer of disbelief is stripped away in the terror of that close call.
Think about it....they did escape, right? And with knowledge that alot of people will never have in life...that there is a God and He wants us to believe in Him.
God's word often compares Him to a refining fire. He has to burn away the dross to reveal what is true gold.

Come to me all you who are down trodden---The meek shall inherit the earth---This world lies in the power of the wicked one (Satin the Devil). God is waiting for the time when he will vindicate his name . Your question would take me a whole conversation to answer correctly.

If they were walking with him and abiding in him, he would have told
them, evidently they were walking too far away from God
God has the power. It's not his fault, it was theirs
