There are probably several possibilities such as Dieppe in WWI but I believe the answer you're looking for is Dunkirk in 1940. This was the British evacuation from the continent made possible by Hitler holding back the army so the air force could achieve the total victory (which didn't happen). Could be Svestopol (Black Sea) or St Petersburg (Baltic Sea) too but Dunkirk is the most famous.
