1/3 + 1/2 is the same thing as: 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6
This means that the part in the ground and the part in the water account for 5/6 of the pole. That leaves 1/6 left. 1/6 of the pole is equal to nine feet, so the whole pole is 9ft x 6 (parts the whole pole)
The answer is 54 ft.

ok....
9 feet is out of the water.
1/2 of the pole is in the ground so you should double 9 feet which makes it 18 for now.
1/3 of it is covered by water, so you multiply 9 by 3, which is 27.
So, 27 feet is in the ground, 18 feet is covered by water, and 9 feet is out of the water.
So....The answer is 54 feet.

Your question is somewhat vague and creates a doubt as to the 1/3 above water...
If it is 1/3 of the remaining half, answer is 27 ft..
if it is 1/3 of the total length of the pole, answer is 54 ft.

27 feet because 2/3 left over is 9 plus 1/3 is 4.5 so its 13.5 multiply by 2 is 27
So can you shed light on the scenario a bit more? Is 1/3 of the pole or 1/3 of the remaining 1/2?
Perhaps the question is vague so you come up with two answers to show you thought about it.

Make an equation. 1/2*x is what is in the ground. That means that 9 ft + 1/3*x=1/2x. Now you just need to solve for x. I recommend multiplying everything by 6 which gives you 54+2x=3x. 3x-2x=54 So... x=54 ft. Hope that helps.

1/2*x+1/3*x+9=x
3/6*x+2/6*x+9=x converting to lowest common denominator
5/6*x+9=x Add
9=1/6*x subtract 5/6*x from both sides
54=x Multiply both sides by 6

54 ft.
9/18 (1/2) underground.
6/18 (1/3) underwater
9 ft (3/18) out of water
3 ft = 1/18
9x3 ft = 27 ft
6 x 3 ft = 18 ft
+ 9 ft =
27 + 18 + 9 = 54ft
