Probably your best bet is to buy a prepaid vodafone packet if you have had your vodafone in Oz for a while ask them to unlock it and use it with a simcard for vodafone NZ if you get a telecom phone it's CDMA and not much use outside NZ, with Vodafone "motormouth" prepaid calls cost 49c a minute to NZ and Oz or "supaprepay" 89c a minute and $2 for 2 hours 7p-7a

sim pack is $35 including $5 credit (can add another $10 by answering survey)
cheapest phone with sim pack is about $80

I would check with your local provider for full details on how your current phone/ plan would operate in NZ first. How long you are going for can make a difference as well, if less than a month might not be worthwhile to get an NZ provider.

My old phone in NZ was pay as you go with Telecom. I really liked it but I think it was almost $1 per minute except at late night hours. I would get around this for longer calls by using one of the pre-paid phone cards (like you use with a pay phone) on my cell since the access number for the card is toll free. The phone and turn on itself is about $50-$100 depending on the phone. Everyone I know who had the Vodafone didn't like them. You can buy activated phones through the trader paper ($2 at any store) and resell yours if you leave through a free ad there.

I think it would be better if you use your current mobile. It's alot easier and cost effective.
Hope you have a great time in New Zealand!
