I agree with him....religion is the cause of many a war! (in God's name-ironic huh?)

Elton John is an elitist who doesn't like the thought of being held accountable for his actions. His diatribe is common among atheists.
I would like to ask him if Mother Theresa was full of hatred, or Hudson Taylor, or Dorothy Day, or Thomas More, or Abraham Lincoln, or the Red Cross, or the Knights of Columbus, or the Lions Club International, or any of the other people and organizations who dedicate their time and talents to ease the suffering of others in the name of their religion.
How much of his vast fortune has he donated to help others? How much of his time has been spent serving food at a soup kitchen?

Religions do teach homophobia. That is actually the main source of homophobia in society. And homophobia is a kind of hatred, so they teach hatred, too.
Now I don't agree that the church should be banned. But I can understand Elton John's frustration about it.
Sorry that I answered, even though I'm not a Christian.
BTW, some of the answers above mine can be taken as good examples to illustrate my point.

Yeah, religion does indirectly teach homphobia, and people use religion as justification for it. But really, many people are homophobes on their own without religion. How many times a day do you hear someone call someone else gay or a fag at school? I doubt they do for the glory of God.

It's so easy to criticize when you are in the public eye, I have to wonder though, what would be Elton's pet hates and peeves? I wonder just how tolerant he is when push comes to shove.

The statement he has made is nothing new, as people are always calling for the band of Christianity, this doesn't worry me one bit as Jesus warned his disciples that such things will take place before He returns back to earth "But take heed to yourselves for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my names sake, for a testimony against them" (mark 13:9) If any thing i will rejoice as prophecy is been fulfilled before our very own eyes.

I read that article. I don't think he has had enough exposure to less judgmental religions, or he should have said "Christianity should be banned." Other religions don't condemn homosexuality, and I don't like it when people lump all religions together with Christianity. Other religions are a lot more tolerant and caring.

I am a Christian and banning Christianity would be taking a precious freedom away from me. I try not to judge people's lifestyles, but when they do it to me it kind of makes me mad and think...well, maybe there lifestyle is bad because it makes them judge mine.

There is a saying....throw a stone into a pack of dogs, and the one that yelps the loudest got hit. Something set this man off. This actually is a good sign, not a bad sign. Perhaps God's spirit has convicted him of something and he is striking out at God and God's people, I don't know.
I pray that the holy spirit will work in this man and that he will repent of his sin and come to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
