There are no freeways or roads in the ocean. Only open ocean, a map and a compass to point you in the right direction. On a cloudy day or night. There is no star or sun to make sure you are pointed in the right direction. The currents and wind will disorient you very easily and that's why sailors use compasses.

A compass is used for navigation. Since it always points north, its user can orient themselves with it and locate their position on a map.
