It kills them indirectly.

The smoking releases a rush of neurotransmitters (the chemicals neurons use to transmit signals to one another) at a much higher rate than normal.

To keep themselves from being overly stimulated, the neurons let the neurotransmitter receptors on their membranes die off.

As a person smokes more and more, more and mroe recepts are allowed to die.

Whenever the person is not smoking, the neurotransmitter signals return to normal levels but are not received since the neurons let the receptors die off.

When a neuron isn't used enough, the brain pretty much kills it to conserve energy/nutrients for the ones that are used.

The more you smoke, the more smoke is needed to achieve a high and the more brain cells die afterward.

Yes, the synapses in your brain can't fire, the dentrides can't stretch to talk to another one, they start to die off. You either use your brain or you loose what you have.
So yes, it and other drugs including alcohol can kill brain cells.

I'm not sure if it kills brain cells but it can stop blood flow to certain parts of your brain. If the doctor does a ct scan of your brain it will look like a block of Swiss cheese!
