My cat brought in a tiny baby mouse this evening, chased him (or her?) around the kitchen for fun, then went up to bed when she'd finished playing, and settled down to sleep very pleased with herself. The poor traumatised little mouse meanwhile, ran for his life and hid under a bookcase. He has since come out and is running from one place to the next, not knowing where to go. How can I catch him and take him back outside?

I agree, be humane and catch the mouse and let it out. The very best thing to attract the mouse is peanut butter. The smell is strong and mice love it. Put it on a cracker or biscuit and put it inside a box then quietly sit somewhere out of the way and wait for the mouse to go in to get the PB. Once inside, just turn the box upright and take the mouse outside to a field some place and set it free.

I had a fully grown mouse come in my back door, I closed not knowing he or she was in.
When I saw the poor thing running round, in a pattern, I knew it was wanting its way out, so I opened the door and away it went.
That poor little mouse in your house is looking for landmarks, and trying to find its way home.
In a laboratory the researchers couldnt figure out why some rats were really fast at running a maze until one noticed that the faster ones were looking up and positioning themselves in the maze by using a water pipe as a landmark!
I do hope the poor thing finds its way out. Otherwise a humane trap would work, then release it in the garden. It is the best you can do for it. And it damned sure beats having the cat kill it.
Also fly paper is cruel, it would starve to death or loose the skin off its feet then starve to death. Some heartless people here, I can say!
Thanks for having feelings for a helpless rodent. It shows a great deal of sensitivity and kindness on your part. I would be the same way.

The best way to do this is to find out where the mouse is right now and quietly wait outside of it. The mouse will eventually come out when it wants food or thinks you're asleep. Have a box or cup with you, and very quickly trap the mouse under it. I have caught mice like this before.

Another way to do this is to get a humane trap from your local store (Walmart/Target should have them). It traps the mouse without injury and you can let him outside.

Lock your cat away in a room or set of rooms where you know the mouse is NOT. That way, the cat has far fewer chances to catch him.

Don't worry--unless the mouse is physically injured, he will be fine. He was shaken up, but mice recover quickly from this kind of thing. My cats have caught and tortured animals my whole life, and the ones that we caught in time always recovered, no problem.

Best thing to do is put a wellington boot or something similar near where the mouse is. They will see it as a dark tunnel and run into it. when it's run inside it will go to the foot of the welly, you can then pick the boot up and take it outside and gently shake it to dislodge it.

I have done this before many times when my cat used to bring mice / voles etc into the house.

good luck.

Ahhh, the memories. I grew up with cat and one (Samantha) was a great mouser. One l-o-v-e-d to play with the mice (Kitty). When I found a mouse in my room and brought Kitty in to catch it, that's where I learned she was a player. So, I got Samantha and felt so bad, but...mice belong outside my house, not inside. So, Sam caught it and I tossed her and the mouse outside (after praising her to death--- cat's love to show you their latest catch!).

You may have to set a trap, or let the cat get it again and ship them both outside.

have fun!

place a fly paper where it usually ran. Put some food on it for an easy trap.... when it tries to get the food or passes through the paper his fur will stick on the sticky liquid and presto!!! roll over the other parts of the fly paper.

Awww poor little guy. If he is uninjured you should try getting him enclosed in one area, that's the best step. Then you can use bait like cheese or making him escape from where he is so you can catch him in the enclosed in the area.
