I would say it is OK for her to be with a Nanny who speaks Hindi. Let her learn Hindi- in the long run you will be grateful (as it will ease your stress of hiring a Nanny as very few Indian nannies speak english).
I think you can talk to her in english at every opportunity you get, sometime u may say it in Hindi and then say it in English (few common things) this may help to communicate and connect things when she does go to pre-school.
Secondly once she starts going to school- she will learn english very quickly.
Don't worry from now- she is 5 mths old... but you can try the above said and it will definitely work

Juls, no I don't think it is enough, but I might have an idea that will help. I love different languages. If I had it to do over again I would learn as many as I could. One thing that I love is when somebody says something in, say, French, then they immediately repeat it in English. I pick up on the other language so fast when I hear it that way. So maybe when you talk to her you just can do that. Hope I explained that clearly. Good luck, I think its a great idea.

It sounds like what you are doing is about right. She will learn both quite easily. My hubby is bilingual in both Hindi and English. Mum speaks English, Papa speaks Hindi. Children are very receptive to language, especially the more they hear it at an early age. Her first words might be a bit delayed, since she is learning to sort out not one, but two different systems.

Probably not.

But, it's nothing to worry about. I've had Indian friends who spoke Tamil or Hindi when entering kindergarten and learned English very fast. Now, they don't even remember the other language.

It will be a little hard for you.You have to say everything twice.Once in English and once in Hindi. If not you have to wait until she starts a head start program at 3 years old. That's what i did with my son.He is 4 1/2 and almost speaks fluent English.Good luck.

I think that should be good. Don't forget she will learn English in school too. My niece speaks Spanish, English and 3 dialects of Chinese. She learns English with her mom and Spanish in school and the Chinese with her grandma.

it is easy to learn a language when you are young, kids catch on really fast. as she gets older use english in everyday life. and tell her the meaning and names of things in both languages. simply hearing a language doesnt make her learn it, she has to learn what the words mean.

im russian and my hubby is hispanic, so we talk to our kids in english a good part of the day, but when im home alone with the kids i talk to them in russian and when he is home he talks spanish. i read to them in russian and english. the way i see it is that they will always learn english because they live in the states, but its my husbands and my native language they will not learn if we dont teach them. so i would talk to her in your language as much as possible. Good luck
