I wouldn't rattle before shooting light. When I have had response to rattling, it has been very fast. They won't hang around waiting for daylight if they don't find what they were expecting.

Big Bucks Fighting

Two winters ago, I couldn't sleep so I got up and sat in the dining room, about 4:00 a.m.. The moon was full so it was a white night. Out by my feeder I could see the deer wandering around. The does disappeared and out walks this huge one, I call Big Buck. I noticed another coming up and they started sparring (fighting?) (teaching?) out by the feeder. After they left two little ones (button bucks) came out and they did the same thing. It was if the two bigger ones were giving a lesson or the two little ones were just mimicking the big ones.
I would have to say yes, they do, but maybe it's in the early morning. I've never actually went out there at night and listened for the sound of their antlers. Good question.

Seeing how deer do most of there activity at night it is a safe bet they would also fight. I always start my rattling just before first light!

they fight all the time to establish dominance. I would wait until I could see some before I move around and make noise. You want to let things settle some before you can see.
