i thought if you were drafted say during the vietnam era, if you didn't wanna fight, why couldn't you just fail basic training on purpose so you won't go?

During the Viet Nam War, many guys did just that! And more! They would eat Poppy Seeds to test positive for drugs, wear ladies panties to the physical examination so they would be tossed out for being gay, some would gain weight in excess of the approved amount for induction, and any multitude of other ways to try and beat the system. Some even went as far as to flee to Canada to escape the draft. Some worked others didn't.

You cant fail basic if you are physically fit to serve. You will pass basic and if the draft is put back in place. Basic will be shorted to about 5 weeks for Army/Marines to push recruits out quicker. And the closed Recruit Training Bases will re-open to push even more recruits.

If the draft is put back in, the standards will drop also to allow more soldiers in...And the infantry will be about 80% of their assignment

You just asked a very hard question. We are talking about something very powerful happening to a person's mind. They need you there doing your job, and you need them there doing their job. I have talked to quite a few Vietnam veterans over the years. I think they would all agree that a few weeks into basic training the unit became so important to them that they didn't want to let their friends down, even if they disagreed with the Vietnam war politically. If a guy didn't run to Canada or go into the MEPS proclaiming his flaming homosexuality, they forced him into basic, and after that it was about not letting your friends down.

You can't really fail basic, if its for the draft. The thought is learn or die. If you injure yourself or run to get out of going then you will face charges and go to jail via the military. But, if you're called to fight you shouldn't try to get out of it. That is disgraceful and cowardly. Some people should defend the rights and country they so enjoy, instead of hide behind them.
