The story I heard is that sometime in the1800's a Dalmatian was saved from a fire in new york . It stayed with the fire company and became its mascot eventually becoming a tradition with fire men.

The Dalmation was originally a Carriage dog - bred to run under the horse drawn carriage. (Hence the AKC height requirement)
I'm fairly sure the Fire station mascot originated because the original fire trucks were horse drawn... but I'm not positive

i think that i read somewhere that they were used because they are brave and active dogs, also they looked cute but, still had the hunting and retrving blood
