There are a great many. For example, if you are angry or upset, and you learn to meditate to calm yourself, you will find your breathing and heart rate can be brought down to normal by an act of will. You decide that what you are going to do is calm yourself, and you do so.

Or if you have been feeling confused or overwhelmed, any negative feeling at all, really, meditation can help center you so that you can deal with the problems you face with calm deliberation. Meditation is not itself deliberation, but the ability to gain sufficient control over yourself that you can then deliberate on the facts and circumstances, and make your choices with wisdom.

Don't be afraid of the word "wisdom." It's not the exclusive property of the old man with a long beard. It starts building up from the time you are young, and there's no time like the present to get yourself a little more.

My mother, a Methodist Sunday school teacher, said that prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to God. I'm no Methodist, nor even a Christian, but that's a pretty good definition in my book. You don't have to be able to assume the lotus position; just sit up straight, close your eyes, and be at peace within yourself. Listen.

If you learn to meditate well, one of the most beneficial things you will gain from meditation would come with the recognition of yourself. If you take the time to understand yourself on a much deeper level, it is said that you are more secure with yourself.
There are thoughts, concepts, feelings, and emotions that are stored deep inside of ourselves on the unconscious level. Meditation gives you the opportunity to face these possible disasters(or possibly great things), understand them, and conquer them. It is completely practical.
