Hi. There is generally two types of ceramic soap dishes that were installed in residential or commercial bathrooms. They look the same from tha outside, the difference is the back that is attached to the wall. The one type is what they called a flush mount and simply was glued onto the wall board or dry wall etc. The other is a recessed type where a hole was pre cut unto the wall surface and was mortared into place with the same grout (cemment) that fills the spaces between the tiles. In either case you must first scrape out all the grout around the perimiter of the soap dish. You can use a utility knife or a slender screw driver or simular object. Next take a stiff rubber mallet and begin tapping the dish from all sides. (SHIELD YOUR EYES WITH SAFETY GLASSES!!) As well protect the tub rim and bottom to prevent the posibility of chipping the tub should the dish fall and hit it. If it is the type we called a " soap and grab" meaning it has a grab handle as well as a bar soap holder, you can grab that while tapping. Go at it slow and be patient because if it was installed right it will be stuck good. If it was the recessed type it will no doubt have a large glob of grout on the back side and will take a bit more time. If you do not care to keep the dish you can also take a regular hammer and hit it a little at a time right in the middle of the back of it and it will eventually shatter. It is after all a glass like a coffee mug except thicker. Please be careful ! 1. Protect your eyes and hands. 2. Protect the tub surfaces. 3. Make sure you have cleared out all the grout around the fixture so the banging will not transfer the shocks to the surrounding tiles. Good luck and hope this helps you out.
