I don't want the frosting to be flat like most homemade cupcakes. I want to make it look something like this (like it's been bought at a store): How do I get this effect because it looks so complicated.

u can use a pastry bag w/ piping. u may also use a squeeze bottle or if u dont have any of these you may use:

a clear plastic & then cut the tip using a zigzag scissor.
make sure you cut the tip very small like a half a centimeter or smaller than that. pinch the tip while putting the frosting so that it will not spill.

Use a pastry bag with a star tip or try dipping the tops of the cupcakes into a bowl of whipped frosting. Both suggestions are easy to do.

Not only will you need a piping bag but you will need to make your icing thicker than normal - as runny icing will self level itself.

Try this

6 cups of icing sugar
2 tbs soft butter
1 tsp milk

mix all together and add your colouring. It really needs to be a thick paste, if it will run off a spoon it is too thin. Add more icing sugar or milk until you get the right consistancy (kind of a peanut butter consistancy)

Like the others have said, use a pastry bag and a Wilton tip 1M. If you don't have a pastry bag or don't want to invest in one, you can easily use a large ziploc bag. Just cut off 1 corner enough so that the icing tip can come out of it and ice away :)

You need a frosting or piping bag that has a special shaped tip to produce that type of frosting effect.

Take a frosting bag......the kind used for decorating cakes, and use a large tip to pipe the frosting on.
