I've seen it several times, just today. Why do Christians eat pork? Why don't adulterous wives get stoned to death? Why don't Christians BEAT their children? "The Bible SAYS...."

Have these people actually READ the Bible through? Do they understand it? Do they understans times and context? Literary forms?

I know the spiritual cannot be understood by the carnal, but black & white (& red) print?

Putting aside Believer versus Non-Believer, isn't it just humaly WRONG to attack someone's beliefs if you know nothing about them?

daljack: sorry, I wasn't referring to anyone specific. It's a scripture (the non-spiritual - person - cannot understand the spiritual nature of God). Nothing personal...

You need to understand that a certain type of Christian says "The Bible is the revealed, unchanging, literal word of God." Now, this same Christian when questioned about things like stonings, or slaying as forms of punishment or other rules from the Bible which they do not follow, suddenly has exceptions and reasons not to follow what they refer to as God's word. There is a hypocrisy and contradiction here that they are unwilling to face.

Either we are facing a conscious and deliberate sinner, or their premise of the Bible as the literal word of God doesn't hold up. You can't have it both ways. The Bible is the literal word of God... Oh, but you've to interpret the clues. It either is or isn't folks. You can't turn the literal part on and off at your convenience.

To bash someone for their beliefs is wrong. However, if you are going to participate in a public forum, you must expect that your beliefs, ideas, and comments will be challenged. Not everyone will agree with you. That is the purpose of these forums, dialog.

In some cases (not all, admittedly) it is not an attack but a genuine desire to understand.

I understand times and context, but I cannot comprehend why in cases where verses are side by side, one law/verse is still upheld because "God's laws do not change!" but the other is cast aside.

I have read the bible, and nope -- black, white or red words -- it cannot easily be understood. Were this not so there would be only *one* faith that believed in it and no room for interpretation. Clearly that is not so!

if you believe a star is made of cheese and I think it is made of diamonds--what is the solution? neither of us have actually BEEN to the star we only have what we are told. You were told and believe one thing and I was told/believe something else.
Which one of us is right?
how about NEITHER
Belief in something that can not be PROVED is IRRATIONAL.
However I do IRRATIONALLY believe in God-just not your VERSION of God. Am I wrong? Are you?

When the Christian leaders refer to the Bible as the 100% accurate "WORD OF GOD" and then use it to marginalize and hate others all the while picking and choosing which of "GOD'S" rules apply and which do not is HYPOCRITICAL.
Have YOU read the Bible? Have you studied it? Do you KNOW how the Bible came to exist--MEN voted on it in the 4th century.
Women are PROPERTY in the Bible-unable to speak in church and ordered to be docile and submissive to her husband.
Do you want the New Testament references?

CAN SOMEONE OF FAITH FOR ONCE ACKNOWLEDGE THE HYPOCRISY OF THEIR FAITH? Accept that while YOU believe you have all the answers--that does NOT mean another person's beliefs are NOT JUST as valid as YOUR OWN?

attacking ? I suppose a better term is debating , rather than attacking...to me as a christian , it is ok to debate...Paul and the early disciples did debate at times...I believe , we as believers have nothing to hide...we simply have to prove our faith..the point is that whether the recipients receive the truth or not...and their reward will be given by the Judge , Jesus , on that terrible and fearful day of his coming....who knows , by debating , an atheist sees the truth , turns and is saved ? isn't that what Jesus taught in his parable of the lost sheep ? 1/100 was lost and then found , what great joy there is in heaven ! we must not be like the brother of the prodigal son , whom on returning , was accepted by the father ( God ) but not the self-righteous brother..we should not worry about criticisms if our faith stands sure in Christ ...wasn't he too being persecuted to the extend of death ? we therefore should expect likewise of our faith or else we are not worthy of his footsteps ....so don't be discouraged , just sow the seed , and Jesus will do the rest : give life eternal...I John 4 : 8 , 20 ...HE THAT LOVETH NOT KNOWETH NOT GOD : FOR GOD IS LOVE...IF A MAN SAY I LOVE GOD AND HATES HIS BROTHER , HE IS A LIAR...AND THIS COMMANDMENT WE HAVE FROM HIM , THAT HE WHO LOVES GOD LOVES HIS BROTHER ALSO...verse 21 ....God Bless

We are no longer under the laws of the Old Testament, if we were, then we would still be under the old covenant, we are now under a New Covenant, one that Jesus Christ set up. We are to obey the New Testament and its teachings, The Old testament is the laws and rules and regulations that Moses set up for the Jews to follow. If there was not flaws with the first covenant there would be no need for a new covenant.
The Disciples were quite clear you can't follow the old Testament and the New Testament. You are either a follower of Moses and His teachings ( OT ) are you are now a follower of the Jesus Christ and His teachings ( NT ) you can't do both.

A lot of the problem that I see is that Christians seem to pick and choose what they want to follow out of the bible. They don't like homosexuals, but have no problems eating pork or lying or having affairs or cheating on taxes or what not.

What I have a problem with is people who try to use the bible to justify something, but scream "foul!" when you point out something else that it says, claiming.. 'That's old testament, you can't use that anymore!'

It's the inconsistancy and hypocrasy that gets me, not Christians themselves. Hypocritical pagans annoy me just as much.

Most modern-day Christians follow the teachings of Paul rather than those of Christ. As such, they feel they can honor God without following the Jewish ways. It's hogwash. Even Christ specifically said he did not come to do away with the old laws, but merely fulfill them.

The question I have is why do some Christians say that some old testament laws still count, but some don't? Do you get to pick and choose?

You just called some of us "carnal" that doesn't sound very nice.

I'm an atheist but I respect your beliefs....so please don't paint everyone with the same brush.

ALL people are individuals and I really have a problem with people lumping people together.

It makes it hard to understand what it means to be a Christian.

You're attacking non-believers the same way you're saying they attack christians. And what are OverTime laws anyway? I thought all states have their own laws in this regard
