The only time my cat wants to be petted is when she gets sleepy. Other than then, she doesn't want anything to do with anybody. But when she's ready to go to sleep, she climbs in my lap and snuggles till she's out. What's up with her?

The person above who stated that cats own us, not we them, basically said it all. LOL

Cats are independent by nature. Especially the ones you get as older kittens or adults. ( Very young kittens exhibit affection quicker. ) But I bumped into the following little tidbit of insight all on my own and quite by accident: The quickest way into a cat's heart - and the best way to bring their loving, cuddling nature out - is to just let them be independent. All those times you think they are ignoring you? They're not. They're actually "studying" you very intensely ... they just don't let you see them doing it.

Frankly, the fact that your cat craves your attention when she's sleepy says to me that she she's done enough studying of you to feel assured that you will take good care of her while she is in her most vulnerable state. That's a great indicator of trust ... and she's paying you a very great compliment !! Trust is the ultimate compliment a cat will pay a person.

Be patient. Since she obviously trusts you, she also obviously loves you. I have a hunch that as your cat ages, she'll show her warm & cuddly side more and more.

Here is a site that I find absolutely wonderful; it has a whole slew of links that are all about cat behavior ... you'll find some insights into your cat's aloofness browsing through the links:

Best wishes to you and your kitty companion!

You can't always get pussy when you want it; you're just going to have to wait until it wants you. It's normal, so be patient; you certainly can't force it.
