Luke 1:

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

My mistake, you are correct Mary was not a virgin birth.

According to Halakhah (Jewish Law), one is only considered Jewish if his or her mother is Jewish. As such, unless your mom is Jewish (or you could prove maternal descent of Jewishness), you would not be Jewish.

Go back to the book of Ruth. In there you will see the roots of the Jewish idea of "adoption" and the "Kinsman Redeemer".

If you study the lineage of Joseph (through to Jesus) - it is clear that Jesus was (supposedly) the son of Joseph...(Luke 1:23 "And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,")

By Jewish Law - Jesus was Joseph's son - by adoption.

The OT is full of rich kinsman-redeemer parallels.

P.S. It is even more interesting to note that Ruth herself was in the lineage of Jesus.

The family line goes thru the father in Jewish familes. Joseph was from the line of David as well as Mary. Read Matthew 1

Good questionn.
a) In Jewish law the family line goes through the father. Thus you have brothers marrying a widow to preserve the deceased brother's name. This is also why adultery originally applied to the woman, not the man - it was imperative to know who the daddy was.
b) The New T. gives two different geneologies to cover the situation. MT. is stylized Jewish and Luke is Gentile.
c) Part of the Joseph - Bethlehem is not only because of the male line but also because of the Bethlehem link as the home of David.

Mary's lineage is traced through to King David by Matthew
for our Jewish friends to know
Luke traces Joseph through David back to Adam
for the world to know (Luke 3:23ff)
Jesus was the Virgin Birth

According to the Bible, it says that your father determines your Jewish heritage. If the mother had been the source of one's being Jewish, then quite a few people in the Bible who were Jewish wouldn't be considered Jews.
The Jewish Law today is not entirely the same as it was during the Biblical days. It has changed to help the fact that the Jewish Temple is gone and the Jews needed a new form of salvation, which they created via the Talmud, Mishnah, etc. They changed it to the mother being Jewish making a child Jewish because no one can dispute who their mother is.

Mary wasn't of virgin birth, she was a virgin who gave birth to Jesus
Yes, my understanding is that the Jewish family line is traced through the moms

Yes, Joseph was of the line of David - how fortuitous that even Jesus' step father was of the same lineage as his wife.

The book of Matthew provides Joseph's lineage.

It's important because Jesus was adopted into Joseph's family line, and an adopted son had all the rights of a natural born son, and since he was the firstborn, he lays claim to Joseph's lineage, and that is through the kingly line directly to King David, but he misses the curse upon the "seed" of Jeconiah.

So Jesus is the ONLY one qualified to prosper sitting upon the throne of David.

It seems that both Mary and Joseph were of the line of David.
The bible never said that Mary was of virgin birth.

Both Mary and Joseph were of the line of David. One Gospel writer traced Joseph's, another traced Mary's.
One line came through the prostitute, Rahab, from the city of Jericho - the one who helped hide Joshua's spies.

Joseph and Mary were both from the line of David. GOD made sure that no one could doubt that. It would depend on how you perceived what would constitute "Linage". see? The gentiles are part of the kingdom also.

May GOD richly bless you.
