There is more than one ZIP code for California. The basic ZIP code consists of five digits, not four. The full ZIP code adds another four digits which identifies the post office, so the full ZIP code for any one post office address is nine digits in the form XXXXX-XXXX.

Cities would have their own ZIP codes, some larger cities more than one. Some large buildings would have their own ZIP code. For example the Empire State Building in New York City has its very own ZIP code.

You need to be more specific when asking about a California ZIP code because there are many.

There is no single ZIP code that covers all of California (or any other state). The best you can say for ALL of California is that all the ZIP codes begin with the number "9". Every city has at least one 5-digit ZIP code, and virtually every block or address will have a different 9-digit ZIP code. There is no such thing as a 4-digit ZIP code in the United States.

If you know a specific address, go to a mapping service, such as Yahoo! Maps, and enter the complete address. Normally the complete 9-digit ZIP code will appear with the map.
