Well, how uppity are the hosts? My preference is Merlot, (no rules any more) but, if you have poeple who think they are wine connisures the take a chilled Gwertstrmeiner. It will suit the white winers. (no pun intended).
Side dish? something out of the ordinary no one might duplicate..

Squash and Apple Bake

2 lb Butternut Squash Or
Buttercup Squash
1/2 cup Brown sugar packed
3 tbl Butter or margarine melted
1 tbl Flour
1 tsp Salt

2 x Baking Apples Peeled, Cored
And cut into 1/2" slices

Cut each squash in half. Remove seeds and fibers; pare squash. Cut into 1/2" slices. Stir remaining ingredients together, except apple slices.
Arrange squash in an ungreased 11-1/2x7-1/2x1-1/2-inch baking dish. Top with apple slices. Sprinkle sugar mixture over top. cover with foil. Bake in a 350F oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until squash is tender.

wine snobs like dry whites with a bird but for flavour buy a decent zinfandel california wines and newyork state are fine the french vines are actually california vines transplanted after ww1 there was a blight so now heres the scoop if you like a red merlot drink it with beef or chicken its only snobs that insist on coors flovour is the key light fruity whites are my favorite and id take one i tasted and liked and sides the turkey and dressing are locked so take a desert or the wine and some green bean cassarole and a box of chocolate like some ferrero rochers just like one or two apiece
