A widely held belief is that it is questioned for being most deceptive and disguised as good for the soul but actually promotes more control of individuals than most other belief systems.

Control and the creation of fear in man is contrary to God's law of creation 'free will'

I would guess that any true research done to prove or disprove this theory would be stopped in its tracks by the Catholic Church ;)

As of the latest tally sheet, Catholics have the greatest number of followers all over the world against the combined forces of all Christian denominations put together. Only in USA and UK are Catholics quite out-numbered but still a formidable few.

Lol, I believe at the time being , Islam is more despised than Catholicism. Fear of the unknown and refusing to learn are two basis for such hatred of another.

Perhaps of the Christian denominations it is. Some other Christians claim they are not true Christians and shun them - not very Christ-like. Here the Christian Book store will not carry rosaries and the crystal shop started getting them in by request (they are a fair to all philosophy)

I don't think so. But some catholics seem to turn on their religion and seem to despise them for some reason.

I guess it would depends who you talk to.

For my part I don't despise one more than the other.

I just hate how people use and twist the words from their religious book to justify their action.

Catholics and Muslims are very good at doing that.
They are as bad as each other.

I guess since we are a pretty large, dominant group world wide you could consider us "despised." I guess it's intimidating.

Probably because it is a religion that is not bible-based. Nowhere in the Bible will you see Mary-worship, saints, popes, priests, mandatory celebacy, etc. That's why most bible-believing Christians hate the Catholic Church. It's just not biblical Christianity and it's not the first Church. The first Church was Jewish, not Catholic. The Catholic Church wasn't born until the fourth century under Emperor Constantine.
